Weve seen some rather exquisite designs from MSI in the past, especially considering the amount of integrated features that are packed onto their high-end motherboards. Im happy to say that the 865PE Neo2-FIS2R follows in the path of its predecessors. The most noticeable item dealing with the board is obviously the bright red PCB. There are several boards available today that utilize colored PCBs and onboard connectors, but few are actually aesthetically pleasing like the 865PE Neo2-FIS2R. When placed against the red PCB, the core components of the motherboard become distinctly detectable.

Much as we have seen with previous i875P and i865PE motherboards that have entered our presence, the processor socket on the 865PE Neo2-FIS2R is oriented lengthwise from north to south, with the retention mechanism nearly reaching the top edge of the PCB. The area within the retention mechanism is clean and free of larger capacitors or resistors, although if we take a look along the top edge of the retention mechanism, well come across the main Intersil core voltage regulation chip. The area to the right of the retention mechanism between it, and the DIMM sockets is very clean and clear of all but one small capacitor. This area is also home to the CPU fan three-pin power connector, an open area with great ease of access.

To the left of the processor socket area, we next come across the core components of the 865PE Neo2-FIS2Rs core voltage supply. Here we can see that the 865PE Neo2-FIS2R provides a three-phase power solution driving two FETs per phase. The 865PE Neo2-FIS2R uses a pairing of the Intersil ISL6556BCB with two HIP6602BCBs for phase control, over / under voltage monitoring, and for driving the FETs. The 6556BCB chip controls the voltage for the processor, and allows for up to 4 buck channels, a 6-Bit VID, and features integrated temperature compensation. Due to the 6-Bit VID input, this typically allows for voltages between .8375V to 1.600V in 12.5mV steps. MSI have modified the system to allow for core voltages up to an astounding 2.3V! The 6602BCB chip is the MOSFET driver which drives both gates in a range of 5V to 12V.
