We judged if the MA790FXT-UD4P was a great board, despite all the features sacrified to bring the cost down. Inversely, are all these features really worth the $40 which brings the cost of the MA790FXT-UD5P up to $180? This is what we will investigate in this article. Also, will it offer a more performance or about the same, as we would think? We will see.

AM3 has never looked so good. With support for both DDR2 and DDR3 on the same CPU, the possibilities with this platform are endless. We have already seen quite a few good boards come out, either supporting one or the other technology and some with both. But one thing remains constant; a good price and a pretty good performing board and CPU combo for the outlay.

The packaging is Gigabyte's signature design, showing off its technologies and designs. Displayed on the front are some of the features that the MA790FXT-UD5P offers to its users, as well as showing off the two ounce copper layers that help cool the board. On the back of the packaging are expanded views of the features, as well as the specifications for the board, such as CrossFire capabilities and RAID features.

Gigabyte is a name that most computer enthusiasts will know, as they have had a number of successful motherboards over the years. They consistently produce boards that perform great and are very good overclockers. When you put Gigabyte together with a great overclocking Phenom II X3 CPU, the 790FX northbridge and the SB750 southbridge, you expect to get something good. And we did get something good.

The Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P is the second AM3 motherboard we have seen following on from the Asus M4A79T Deluxe. We were deeply impressed by the way that the Asus overclocked the new Socket AM3 Phenom but as we concluded in the review;
"This is the first AM3 motherboard we have seen in action so we cannot be sure how much of the credit lies with AMD and how much should go to Asus. For the time being it is safest to say that AM3 puts AMD back in the game and Asus has done a fine job." Hopefully the Gigabyte MA790FXT-UD5P will help us to answer that very question.

"Gigabyte's GA-MA790FXT-UD5P motherboard is based on the AMD 790FX and SB750 chipsets and offers up much in the way of dual videocard gaming and generally fast socket AM3 AMD processor support. At its heart is AMDs 790FX chipset which supports HyperTransport 3.0 at 5200 MT/S. The Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P supports DDR3 memory at speeds of up to 1066/1333MHz, and 1666 MHz when overclocked."

"The inclusion of so many new features can cripple the functionality of other features such as CrossfireX on the P55 chipset, but the 790FX chipset is built with more than 36 PCI Express lanes in mind for 4-way Crossfire, meaning there is plenty of headroom for using the PCI Express lanes for SATA 3 and USB 3.0 with the Marvell and NEC controller chips. Performance was pretty good on this system."

The MA790XT-UD4P motherboard is what I would consider in the middle to upper class of AM3 motherboards that GIGABYTE offers. Based on the AMD 790X/SB750 chipset combination it supports all of the latest AMD Phenom II and Athlon II processors, and also has ATI CrossFireX support.
