The challenger today is MSI’s X299M Gaming Pro Carbon AC, which leverages the ‘Carbon’ branding from MSI to offer a cleaner look, although there are LEDs on board just in case. Due to the size there are some considerations to feature support that are worth examining.

To keep costs down, the MSI B350 Tomahawk uses the budget oriented controllers, such as the Realtek ALC892 audio codec and a Realtek 8111H network controller. Onboard video includes a HDMI 1.4 port, a DVI-D port and VGA. Users with an APU expecting a DisplayPort will have to look at pricier motherboard options.

With the AM4 socket, this motherboard will house everything from the Ryzen range, such as the Ryzen 3, 5 and 7 series, including the 1800X. However, today we’ll be testing it with the Ryzen with Vega 2400. With the cost of the CPU and motherboard coming in at around £230, and not requiring a GPU for 720P and even 1080p gaming performance, that’s a tempting deal for many consumers.

MSI’s Tomahawk comes with limited RGB, which makes sense, since many buyers have never really wanted to pay for that feature, anyway. Those few who swoon over RGB, however, likely won’t be disappointed by its minimization at this price level, while others who passionately hate it can simply turn it off. But that’s not the only feature that MSI scaled back on this relative “budget” Z370 board.

In our next review we have the MSI B360M Mortar Titanium in the spotlight. This motherboard dips into two of MSI’s renowned series – Mortar (Micro-ATX) and Titanium (Grey, contrast design). A brief glimpse of the styling quickly reveals a rather unique looking solution which is sure to turn heads and allow those wanting to create a light coloured theme with a good foundation.

At an MSRP of £109, the board is going up against Gigabyte’s AB350N-Gaming WiFi, and the latter is certainly a little more attractive with a less obvious brown PCB and some red details compared to the slightly generic black theme going on with the MSI board.

But compared to boards supporting AMD’s massive Ryzen Threadripper CPUs, they are a bargain. MSI’s X399 Gaming Pro Carbon AC, for example, sells for more than $380. The MSI Z370 Gaming Pro Carbon AC we’re checking out today can readily be found for $10 or $20 below what seems to be a $209.99 list price.
