The only other model which was able to exchange blows with the Ballistix MAX kit is the equally fast (slightly faster actually if we also take timings into account) Trident ROYAL kit by GSkill. Unfortunately, due to motherboard limitations the X299 system wouldn’t boot no matter what i did at frequencies over 4GHz so i had to use the Z390 system for overclocking, even though it ended going up to just 4200MHz (i was expecting a stable 4400MHz which didn’t happen, not with 1.4V and CL19)

In our testing, the B550M-Plus Wi-Fi performed well at stock speeds, easily matching all other B550 results. The only potential outlier was application startup and the Powerpoint tests in PCMark. Outside of that, our gaming results were spot on and power consumption was right about in the middle.

The MSI Z490I Unify is a capable and well-equipped board, if not a little scant on the rear I/O USB support. To have Thunderbolt, MSI sacrificed a bit on the I/O, and I think that may have been a great choice. However, if you have a ton of peripherals, you may need to drop a little coin on a good USB hub.

ITX cases are nothing new, we’ve seen them for a good while now, but the really small and unique ITX cases are becoming extremely popular. These are typically sold as kits and are only available in small quantities. With these kits becoming increasingly popular major case manufactures are taking notice and releasing their own small ITX cases. We saw NZXT with their 13.6 L H1 and now we have Fractal Design with their Era ITX.

Clocking in around $80, it sits rather more comfortably with the value-orientated B550’s market positioning. Not that the B550 is a bum chipset. In fact, it isn’t miles away from its bigger X570 brother by most metrics. The key differentiator between the two involves the link between the CPU and PCH chip, the latter essentially being the motherboard chipset thanks to much of what used to be chipset functionality now residing on the CPU package.

So what is Z490 offering right now? For starters, there has been a large focus on VRM and VRM cooling design. With the top-level Intel Core i9-10900K featuring 10 cores along with HyperThreading, the ability to deliver clean, continuous power is going to be one of the primary factors that separates a good Z490 board from the competition. With the introduction of HyperThreading on Intel’s mid-range line-up, power delivery is going to be vital in all segments.
