MSI MAG B550M MORTAR

MSI has released the usual lineup of motherboards under several names including Pro, Tomahawk, Bazooka, Gaming, and the Mortar. While the actual name doesn’t have any bearing on the B550 chipset, the additional features each model provides is what is important. For those who favor only a system for gaming might consider the aptly named “Gaming” motherboards.

Best Intel Motherboards: July 2020

For Intel’s  latest 10th Generation Comet Lake processors on the market, although stock and supply has been somewhat impacted, it has been no more affected than usual for a new Intel product launch. The market is awash with its new LGA 1200 socket processors, including B460, H460, Z490, and the W480 chipsets, among others.

ASUS ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING

Allow me to present the Asus ROG Strix B550-E Gaming, the most expensive of Asus’ new lineup of AMD B550 boards.  Nearly $300 for a motherboard based on a budget chipset? Really? If that sounds like something you never knew you needed, hold on. It’s not actually altogether crazy.

ASUS TUF GAMING B460M PLUS (WI-FI)

The Asus TUF Gaming B460M-Plus Wi-Fi follows on from the affordable ASRock and MSI’s B460 boards we’ve also been testing . Asus’ TUF products have evolved from the original Sabertooth boards into a distinct sub-brand. TUF branded supporting components, featuring the distinctive yellow tinged aesthetic, are also being produced by many peripheral manufacturers too.

AMD Ryzen 9 3900XT, Ryzen 7 3800XT & Ryzen 5 3600XT

A quick glance at the spec sheet shows most of the key specifications remain unchanged, with the most substantial change being that the 12-core 3900XT comes with a 100 MHz higher boost, the 8-core Ryzen 7 3800X gains 200 MHz, and the 6-core Ryzen 5 3600XT gains 100 MHz.

Due to refinements to the 7nm node, AMD says it improved boost frequencies by 2-4%, but it also improved boost residency, or how long the processor remains at its boost frequency, by up to 80%.

ASRock Z490 Extreme4

The initial cost of buying a new CPU (especially if it’s the i9-10900K) may push the budget up for many system builders and therefore it’s understandable that many who are seeking to move to this new platform will be trying to keep the overall cost to a minimum. Today we’ll be looking to ASRock and their lower-tier range as we test out the Z490 Extreme4 motherboard.

MSI MAG B460M MORTAR WIFI

The MSI MAG B460M Mortar WiFi—let’s just call it the Mortar—is a Micro ATX board with a feature list we consider to be very competitive. Though looks are obviously subjective, I think it’s a very nice looking board with solid metal heatsinks and a rather subtle, perhaps even utilitarian theme. There are no RGB LEDs on the board itself but you do get RGB and ARGB connectors if you absolutely must have the bling.
