AMD EPYC 7F52

These processors, with lots of cores, aren’t as fast as consumer processors, so it becomes a tussle whether it makes sense to go fast without security, or to play it safe with a proven platform. With AMD’s new 7F processors, the aim is to provide that proven platform with super-fast cores with lots of cache. We’ve got the 7F52 in for testing today.

ASUS ROG ZENITH II EXTREME ALPHA

We pored over the specs to see if anything changed, and even asked Asus PR, only to be given a vague description of the Zenith II Extreme Alpha being better-optimized for extreme overclocking. We looked for even the slightest alteration, and finally came across a tiny update: While the original Zenith II Extreme had sixteen 70A MOSFETs, the new one is fitted with Infineon TDA21490 90A parts.

GIGABYTE Z390 AORUS MASTER

Now I can’t really say that I was impressed with the performance of either the Realtek ALC1220-VB audio card (still prefer the Creative Sound Blaster Recon3D model used in the Z390 Dark) or the cFosSpeed internet enhancements used with the Intel I219-V 1 Gigabit LAN (virtually no difference with network performance measurements taken with the other two Z390 boards) but it goes without saying that not everything is meant to stand out (at least nowhere near what manufacturers make them out to be).

GIGABYTE TRX40 AORUS XTREME

Gigabyte optimized its TRX40 Aorus Xtreme for four graphics cards at double-slot spacing, differing from the Asus board which has a single space between the second and third slots. While that might seem like a win for Gigabyte, moving the first slot to the case’s top position meant sliding up the DIMMs as well, which in turn limits the amount of space available for voltage regulator cooling.

MSI MPG Z390 GAMING PRO CARBON

It goes without saying but having used and reviewed very old motherboard models with onboard switches (for power/restart/OC) and displays means that I expect something along those lines from all the latest models (regardless of price range) so lacking all of the above is a hit and miss for me and pretty much one of the only serious drawbacks of this model.
