Z390 Master excels in cooling design, with a solid, L-shaped heatsink that wraps around the 12-phase digital VRMs. A solid aluminium block is augmented by stacked fins, and Aorus has thick thermal interface material between it and the VRMs for direct-touch cooling. Measuring 25mm high and screwed in properly on the rear side, this is about as good as motherboard cooling gets.

Ever since the launch of Intel’s Xeon Scalable platform naming scheme, most of the Xeon product stack has gone through a naming scheme transformation. The E5 and E7 families were rolled into the Xeon Scalable line with names like Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, while the workstation focused Xeon E5-1600 parts are now called Xeon W. With that in mind, Intel also changed the Xeon E3-1200 family, into Xeon E, with E being for Entry.

Supporting enough current to supply the Core i7-9700K, we can only recommend buyers consider the C9Z390-CG-IW if they don’t plan on pairing it with the i9-9900K. While custom settings on the board allowed the i9-9900K to operate very well and even reach a 5 percent overclock, stock settings resulted in underclocking or power resets during extremely heavy software loads.
