Supermicro is known and respected for its Server and Workstation hardware whereas its SuperO brand for gaming products are more obscure. The SuperO C7Z370-CG-IW is Supermicro’s first Gaming Mini-ITX board and it has that extra frisson of interest as very few people will know the name.

The flagship Threadripper 2990WX is an $1800 beast armed with an incredible 32 Zen+-based cores and the ability to work on 64 threads concurrently. Threadripper 2970WX wields 24 cores and 48 threads, plus lower boost frequencies, but also pushes pricing down to $1300. Those are both quad-die configurations.

This means that workstation users are often compute bound, and like to throw resources at the problem, be it cores, memory, storage, or graphics acceleration. AMD’s latest foray into the mix is its second generation Threadripper product, also known as Threadripper 2, which breaks the old limit on cores and pricing: the 2990WX gives 32 cores and 64 threads for only $1799. There is also the 2950X, with 16 cores and 32 threads, for a new low of $899. We tested them both.

The ASRock Fatal1ty B360 Gaming K4 we’re looking at here, however, falls flat primarily because of pricing. For just $5 more, the ASRock Fatal1ty H370 Performance offers better connectivity and more PCIe bandwidth for graphics and speedy NVMe storage.

The suitability for overclocking was beyond any doubt, but apart from that we could observe some minor and major mistakes. BIOS versions that could damage the mainboard, an incorrectly designed voltage measuring point and a few software problems clouded the picture a bit. We judged last year that ASUS had lost sight of its sovereignty with the Crosshair product line.
