ASUS designed the X399 ROG Zenith Extreme to be the pinnacle in terms of features and capabilities for the AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor. The list of features is so long that ASUS’s engineers had to use an Extended ATX (E-ATX) PCB to fit everything and, still, that was not enough, forcing them to use additional vertical daughterboards.

As a general rule the Intel B360 and H370 chipsets offer a more affordable route into Intel’s 8th Generation “Coffee Lake” CPUs, than the Z370 chipset. However, there are a number of Z370 motherboard options that are as affordable, if not cheaper, than many B360 or H370 models. MSI manufactures a number of those low-cost Z370 options including the Z370 PC Pro.

The B360 chipset differs from H370 in a few different ways, first you only have support for a single x16 PCI-E slot, only 12 PCI-E lanes (compared to 24), fewer USB ports, and there is no CPU or memory overclocking. Asus knocks it out of the park with the ROG Strix X370-I Gaming when it comes to Mini-ITX form factor motherboards. If money is no concern and building a water-cooled small form factor box is the goal, this Asus surpasses other boards and lands our Tom’s Hardware Editor Recommended Award for that use case.

What’s so good about the B350i Pro AC? It all comes down to the power-phase design. There are nine phases in total here (with the closest competing ITX board housing a meager six in contrast), which helps provide the additional grunt needed to balance the power from that Ryzen core. As soon as you start to take a look at those performance numbers, it’s obvious how big a difference this has made.

The GIGABYTE B360 AORUS Gaming 3 WIFI in our hands today offers users that lower-cost of entry along with quite a few features. At $120, about the only thing missing from a base Z370 board the Gaming 3 Wi-Fi is the ability to overclock.
