ASRock X299 Extreme4

In this review we will focus on the X299 Extreme4 motherboard which is designed for the Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X processors. All tests will be performed on the i9-7900X processor as I don’t think that many users wish to buy 4 core processors for a high-end desktop platform when 6 core Coffee Lake processors cost not much more.

MSI X470 GAMING M7 AC

MSI goes in heavy on the overclocking front, evidenced by the dual 8-pin EPS on the right-hand side. The board works just fine with one, but if you’re overclocking to the limit and have a compatible PSU, there’s no harm in adding a second, and OC potential ought to be helped on by the beefy, 14-phase supply.

ASRock Fatal1ty H370 Performance

Intel’s new H370 chipset targets a more mainstream segment than Z370 sacrificing CPU overclocking ability, among other things, in return for a lower price. Motherboard vendors are therefore able to bring to market gaming-oriented products, like this ASRock Fatal1ty H370 Performance, with lower price points than Z370 equivalents.

MSI X470 Gaming M7 AC

One of the big improvements over X370 boards that X470 models have introduced is improved power circuitry to better deal with AMD’s Ryzen CPUs and to cater for the higher TDPs of certain new 2nd Gen Ryzen models such as the Ryzen 7 2700X. Nowhere is this more evident than the MSI X470 Gaming M7 AC, which in power circuitry terms appears to be an entirely different beast to its predecessor.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VII HERO

Our second X470 review is of ASUS’s Crosshair VII Hero, and it’s one loaded motherboard. At the original Ryzen launch ASUS also launched a Crosshair motherboard, which is part of their top tier ROG brand for AMD. ASUS typically has provided excellent support for AMD systems, and today we look at their best and brightest star, the Crosshair VII Hero.
