The board itself is completely black, with a few silver accents where it could not be avoided. You won’t find integrated RBG lighting here, so you could say that the Unify-Z is darker than the Dark. MSI had opted for a weaker CPU power supply with the MPG-X570 mainboards and made up for it with the B550 counterparts. For a top-class mainboard, the accessories are rather clear, but Gigabyte provides all the important accessories. Apart from a support data carrier, the mainboard manual is of course included, which can be obtained from the Gigabyte website as well as the drivers. Also included are six SATA cables, five M.2 screws, two thermistor cables, the 2T2R WiFi antenna and an RGB extension cable. Choosing a relatively cheap Z690 board with DDR4 memory would allow you to save a few dollars at the moment – especially if you use RAM from an older computer. The most attractive model from Intel’s stable at the moment seems to be the Core i5-12600K, which even with DDR4 should impress with its capabilities. When you put down a few pennies, after a while you can simply replace the board with a model that supports DDR5.

Even entry-level Z-series motherboards come with their fair share of bells and whistles—truly bare-bones motherboards are reserved for cheaper chipsets that Intel hasn’t announced or released yet. In this price range, you generally get four DDR4 memory slots, though a couple (like the MSI Pro Z690-A DDR5 and Z690-A WIFI DDR5) do offer four DDR5 memory slots instead, as well as a PCI Express 5.0 x16 slot for GPUs, a couple of display outputs (usually one DisplayPort, one HDMI), and three or four M.2 2280 slots for installing multiple SSDs.

With the introduction of Intel’s 12th generation Core processors, one of the most significant advancements from the previous generation is that Alder Lake built on the ‘Intel 7’ manufacturing process, includes a hybrid PCIe lane layout. This consists of a total of x16 PCIe 5.0 lanes from the CPU set aside for graphics in either an x16 or x8/x8 configuration, and 4x PCIe 4.0 lanes dedicated to storage devices. Another significant improvement over the previous generation is a new PCIe 4.0 x8 DMI link between the CPU and the Z690 chipset. Previously with 11th gen (Rocket Lake), Intel upheaved it from a PCIe 3.0 x4 uplink on Z490 to a PCIe 3.0 x4 uplink on Z590. With Z690, the uplink is now fully-fledged PCIe 4.0 x8 lanes to interconnect things.
