After ASRock’s version , it’s Asus’ turn to show us what it can do best in the mini-ITX format – the only representative in this format – with its ROG Strix Z690-I Gaming WiFi. The manufacturer is particularly targeting players with its motherboard, hence the term “Gaming” in its name (yes, yes). Intended for Alder Lake processors in LGA 1700 socket, this ROG Strix Z690-I Gaming WiFi appears in any case to be very complete, at least on paper: DDR5 and PCI-Express 5.0 are thus in the spotlight, alongside a multitude other state-of-the-art features. Head to the test bench to dissect this mobo.

On a Mini-ITX format, this motherboard can therefore be placed in very specific boxes such as the MasterBox NR200P style from Cooler Master or even in the Phanteks Evolv SHIFT XT. We are here on the Intel LGA1700 socket, which means that it is compatible with 12th generation Intel Core processors such as the i5-12600K, i7-12700K, i9-12900K and generally anything that starts with “12”. . Likewise, here we have compatibility with DDR5 type memory up to a frequency of 6400 MHz in OC. Attention, we only have two memory slots and we can therefore only go up to 64 GB of RAM capacity at most.

Two more design elements that will make the DIY enthusiast happy: First, M.2 latches mean no more losing those tiny screws. Second, the integrated I/O shield makes sure it’s never forgotten—and comes in handy in cramped cases where it’d be more difficult to maneuver. This is a feature that’s been appearing on higher-end motherboards the last few years, so it’s great to see it here.

ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-I GAMING WIFI – Chiphell

On motherboards with Intel 600 series chipsets, ASUS still uses the ROG Strix I series as its only choice. The high-end model of the layout is the ROG Strix Z690-I Gaming, which is based on the Z690 chipset and needs to be used with DDR5 memory. WiFi. ASUS Z690 & B660 Roundup – Tech Testers

The cheapest ASUS board that passed us was the B660-Creator D4 with a price tag of 235 euros. ASUS is known to be a bit more expensive, and we can understand that in part as their bios and software experience is generally just a bit better than the rest. But B660 boards in this segment struggle with mid-range Z690 boards that often go a bit further with features.

ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-I GAMING WIFI – OC3D

ITX motherboards have come an awfully long way since when they first appeared on the market. Indeed the shift has been so dramatic that their intended use has changed too. Initially they seemed to exist solely to be installed into non-standard cases. Anyone who was around the internet back in the day will remember people having systems build in to their Millenium Falcon, or an old army ammo box, really the possibilities of squeezing a tiny system into a tiny case were almost limitless. What they all had in common though was the case being their primary function.

ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-I GAMING WIFI – Overclockers Russia

Once again, the engineers overcame themselves and made a miracle because the main motto of the company is “in search of the incredible.” Without exaggeration, we can say that this is a unique device and we had to do the impossible to cram at least part of the functionality into such a small format. And we are promised a lot of power phases, good cooling and good overclocking.

ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-I GAMING WIFI – TweakTown

The onboard power design is space-saving with its 10+1 design, but ROG has deployed 105A stages to make up for any losses, and its 1050A capacity should make for solid OC ability. Connectivity doesn’t suffer much, if at all. The Z690-I includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports, 2.5Gbe and WiFi6e, along with USB 3.2 Gen1, 2 and 2×2 available via internal header. Audio is the ALC4080 with a Savitech AMP making for impressive sound without the need of an external DAC.

Powering the CPU is a 10+1 power stage design via a reinforced (ASUS ProCool II) 8-pin CPU power connector. Cooling the VRM (north) is a courtesy of a decent slab of aluminum connected to a larger one (west) via a heat-pipe that goes all the way to the PCH. The CPU fan, AIO pump header and a +12v RGB LED header are also located here. For reference, maximum rated power is 12W @ 1A for each.
