 Asus uses the existing IX Hero as a base and improves upon it in a couple of obvious ways. The first is the specific, thick M.2 heatshield sandwiched between the primary PCIe x16 slot and CPU, and we prefer this to the southbridge-integrated heatsinks on cheaper Asus Z370 boards.

We review the lovely looking ASUS ROG Maximus X Apex motherboard. A € 349,- costing Z370 motherboard style for the high-end PC crowd. It has distinctive looks, PCB cutouts and some of the most spectacular looks thanks to a very sophisticated RGB LED system. The motherboard has been fitted with the kit, including a two Ethernet jacks, and drum-roll … one being fitted with an Aquantica AQC108 5G LAN jack (yay).

ASUS TUF X299 MARK 1

ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X FORMULA

Although the Formula naturally has a slight reduction in the feature set when compared to the Apex, but we still think that you’d be hard pressed to complain. The design is truly spectacular with ASUS finding the sweet spot between the full cover idea of the Sabertooth and the blended IO shield that appeared a few models ago. With built in waterblocks, a steel backplate and the cover there is little PCB left showing and it’s all the better for it.
