That changes with the new B500 series as consumers no longer have PCIe 4.0 on the chipset, instead reverting back to PCIe 3.0. This ultimately should not be an issue, as budget builds are unlikely to have multiple PCIe 4.0 add-in drives, for example. Nonetheless, the high vocal demand for B550 motherboards, especially after AMD launched Ryzen 3, has not gone unnoticed, and there are over 40 new models in the market, most of which should be on sale from today.

In the Gigabyte range the Aorus Master is comfortably the most expensive, with a MSRP of £300, compared to the £195 of the Pro or £185 of the ITX Pro, so you need to make sure that you desire all it can give you. The Aorus Pro still has all the parts we want – PCI Express 4.0 (albeit few lanes than the X570), USB 3.2 Gen2, support for 5GHz+ DDR4 and all the Ryzen CPUs. In fact it’s tough to see exactly what you’re missing out on if you choose to go down the B550 route or even just the Pro rather than the Master.

The Gigabyte B550I AORUS PRO AX Motherboard gets a huge thumbs up from me before it even went on the test bench. It’s mini-ITX and that’s honestly a very rare thing these days. Most of the brands put out mostly ATX, and maybe one mini-ITX. If we’re lucky, we may see an mATX too, but those are even rarer than new mini-ITX models these days.

The AORUS range has become a byword for fantastic quality and performance over the last few years. I mean, really they’re Gigabyte boards, but AORUS is their high-end range much like STRIX is for ASUS and MEG is for MSI. The pro shows us that they can still compete with or beat anything else out there.

B550 is more affordable than X570 as it trims a few of the features, but that hasn’t stopped Gigabyte from releasing a high-end version of the mid-range chipset. That’s an interesting place, as it means high-end features and style, but hopefully at a lower price point than X570! The Gigabyte B550 AORUS Master Motherboard is certainly one of the best-equipped motherboards launching today.
