GIGABYTE has released four motherboards for the TRX40 platform, which we briefly overviewed in our announcement article, and today we have in our lab the flagship GIGABYTE TRX40 AORUS XTREME, which is in my opinion the most featureful, and dare I say most elegant, motherboard of the bunch.

The TRX40 AORUS Master comes with the updated 2019 looks that AORUS has featured on their motherboards. It carries a black and silver color theme with brushed metal surfaces and a very futuristic look which we should expect from AORUS motherboards.

AMD leveraged GlobalFoundries 14nm to build the TRX40 chipset, which in a maximum I/O configuration, offers 16 downstream PCIe 4.0 lanes for peripherals. Like other AMD chipsets, motherboard vendors can select between these PCIe lanes and additional SATA ports, giving board makers some flexibility between PCIe and storage.

Gigabyte’s Aorus boards are the company’s gaming and enthusiast lineup, usually including features such as RGB LEDs, metal “armor” on the DIMM and/or PCIe slots, electrostatic discharge (ESD) guards, along with more of a focus on styling. The Aorus Ultra fits that mold, while offering a wide array of functionality at a reasonable price point.

The sub-$200 X570 Aorus Elite offers a wallet-friendly inroad to AMD’s latest platform. It forgoes some of the extras like USB Type-C, Wi-Fi and lots of RGB. But it handled overclocking our Ryzen 7 3700X without a complaint and performed well in our testing.

This probably isn’t the motherboard into which you should install one of AMD’s Ryzen 9 CPUs with their 12 or 16 cores. Certainly not if you wish to keep it cool. But then the target audience for a product such as this isn’t those users who prize performance above all other considerations.
