MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI DDR4 – TweakTown

B660 should be a fantastic addition to motherboard lineups depending on vendor choices. For MSI, the MAG B660M Mortar is a well-made solution that sports enough connectivity between USB 2.0 and USB 3.2 for most consumers to be happy. I do like that 2.5Gbe has stayed on as a platform feature with B660 and enjoy that MSI has added Wi-Fi even if it’s the older Wi-Fi 6 standard and not 6e.

MSI MAG B660M MORTAR WIFI – Guru3D

MSI equips the B660M Mortar with two PCIe x16 (one Gen 4 the other Gen 3) slots and a single PCIe Gen 4 x1 slot. There are two M.2 slots, both of which have a thermal heat sink finished in the same brushed silver as the rest of the motherboard. The PCH heatsink is coated in the silver palette and embossed with the ‘Mortar’ trademark. Additionally, the board features six SATA III ports. The rear panel connectors include three USB 3.2 Gen 2 Sort-A ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, HDMI, Display-Port, a 2.5G Ethernet port, two WiFi6E antennae, and a seven-channel audio jack array.

On the contrary, something that does not go unnoticed are the brushed aluminum heatsinks that it has spread over its entire surface. These coolers have a generous size and an attractive design with black lines and grooves that give the board some charisma. Another thing that surprised me is that both M.2 ports have their own heatsinks, which MSI calls M.2 Shield Frozr .

Intel B660 Motherboard Prices Leak

Courtesy of a premature listing, we now have our first look at board pricing for some of Intel’s upcoming B660 chipset motherboards from MSI (via @momomo_us). The models listed include the B660M Mortar, B660M Bazooka, and B660M-A featuring much lower prices than most motherboards equipped with Intel’s flagship Z690 chipset. This should make building a cheap Alder Lake system much easier on the budget, with budget-friendly B660 motherboards coming as an option in the near future.

MSI MAG B660M MORTAR Pictured

MSI did give us a small teaser of its B660M Mortar motherboard last week but now we get to see the full upfront view of the motherboard. The B660M Mortar features the LGA 1700 socket & will support the entire range of Intel’s Alder Lake Desktop CPUs. It can house the unlocked lineup all the way up to the Core i9-12900K but the more preferable choice will be to equip this board with the non-K series the launches alongside the B660 series.

Intel H670, B660 and H310 Mobo Specs Revealed

The specifications H670, B660 and H610 motherboard specifications have leaked courtesy of @momomo_us. If they turn out to be accurate—and given momomo’s track record, we have no reason to doubt they won’t be—it points towards H670 and B660 series chipsets being highly capable, though we don’t expect too much from cheap H610 boards. Affordable boards to pair with upcoming i3 and i5 CPUs will be very welcome indeed, though.

Intel B660 Motherboards Limited to PCIe Gen 4?

The fact that B660 motherboards might not support Gen5 is actually a bit surprising considering that Gen5 lanes are attached to the CPU, not the chipset. However, the B660 chipset is aiming at the mid-range segment and 12th Gen Core non-K series. People who might want to upgrade to the LGA1700 platform with the minimum investment are not likely to jump on the Gen5 GPUs and SSDs right away (such devices are expected to launch in the first half of 2022). So needless to say Gen5 is not exactly a feature they might miss.
