As we move into the final period of Q3 2020, there is a wide variety of Intel-based motherboards on the market, spearheaded by LGA1200 models for the current 10th generation Comet Lake processors. The latest LGA1200 socket has the usual variety of Intel chipsets, such as premium Z490 models with official support for the overclocking, down to the more mainstream chipsets such as H460 and B460.

Last week NVIDIA officially launched their RTX 30 series starting with the GeForce RTX 3080. It provided great performance at a great price and really made gaming at 4K enjoyable. Now a week later we have the GeForce RTX 3090. The naming of the card might make you think it sits higher in the product stack (and it does), but it really sits in a category all its own.

The HEDT mainboards are generally not badly equipped, but the Creator actually goes one better and makes use of the innovations that the new CPUs have brought with them. This means USB 3.2 Gen2x2, WiFi 6, 10G LAN and Thunderbolt 3.

The MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio builds on NVIDIA’s strengths with a powerful new board design capable of powering the RTX 3080 with up to 525 W of power even though the chip’s TDP is around 340 W. The most notable change from a user point of view is that instead of the strange 12 pin power input the Founders Edition had, the MSI Gaming X Trio has a more familiar power input setup, with three 8 pin PCIe connectors on the right hand side rather than in the middle.

The Gaming X TRIO is one hefty card and the longest graphics card I have ever used, clocking in at 12.7 inches (323mm). It beats out the EVGA RTX 2080 TI FTW3 and PowerColor RX VEGA 64 Red Devil, which are both monster-sized already. Most PCB sag usually happens around the power connectors and it seems to be a topic among comments on forums. While the video card does have a stiff backplate, it still has a slight decline at the rear. MSI has thought of this and included a support bracket.

MSI’s Gaming X Trio has always been a premium offering, and that is certainly the case with this RTX 3080 model, as it is priced almost £110 more than the RTX 3080’s £649 MSRP. For that extra cash, MSI promises increased performance, lower noise levels and lower temperatures, while also offering plentiful RGB lighting for those looking for some bling.

Gaming X Trio might not be the sexiest card, yet it’s got it where it counts. The thermal design, dubbed ‘Tri Frozr 2,’ incorporates a trio of Torx Fan 4.0 blowers promising a 21 per cent increase in static pressure, as well as a full-length heatsink interspersed with a series of a thick heatpipes. Ideal for taming the 320W underlying GPU and MSI doesn’t skimp on the finer details.

The RTX 3000 series graphics cards are finally here! This time NVIDIA is really pulling out all of the stops! With the RTX 3000 series it appears that NVIDIA is really bringing value to consumers, pricing their RTX 3080 at only $699 and saying the performance will be up to 2x that of the RTX 2080!
