MSI MAG B460M MORTAR WIFI

The MSI MAG B460M Mortar WiFi—let’s just call it the Mortar—is a Micro ATX board with a feature list we consider to be very competitive. Though looks are obviously subjective, I think it’s a very nice looking board with solid metal heatsinks and a rather subtle, perhaps even utilitarian theme. There are no RGB LEDs on the board itself but you do get RGB and ARGB connectors if you absolutely must have the bling.

MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK

The MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk again delivers a well-balanced feature set at a competitive price. Performance is up there with the more expensive boards, and the VRMs held their own even when overclocked. At $180, you’ll have to live without Wi-Fi and just six USB ports on the rear IO, but otherwise, this is a fully featured and capable option.

It is also worth mentioning that MSI B550-A PRO , MSI MPG B550 Gaming Edge and MSI MAG B550 Tomhawk motherboards have identical 10 + 2 + 1 power sections, so their efficiency should be very similar. Stylistically, the Tomahawk series has turned towards the PRO models , with characteristic geometric eyes on the heat sinks and the grille, discreetly giving way to more fancy designs – MPG Gaming Edgeand MPG Gaming Carbon , available only in WiFi variants (which the MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk does not have).

The AMD B550 Motherboard Overview

That changes with the new B500 series as consumers no longer have PCIe 4.0 on the chipset, instead reverting back to PCIe 3.0. This ultimately should not be an issue, as budget builds are unlikely to have multiple PCIe 4.0 add-in drives, for example. Nonetheless, the high vocal demand for B550 motherboards, especially after AMD launched Ryzen 3, has not gone unnoticed, and there are over 40 new models in the market, most of which should be on sale from today.
