For a long period of time going for the lesser chipset meant enough of a compromise it was hard to go in that direction if you wanted a really high performance system, but in modern times the gap between the range topping chipset – in this case the X470 – and the next one down – today’s review of the B450 – is small enough that you can buy the latter with a clear conscience.

We haven’t seen many B450 motherboards in for review since they launched, so today is a good day. I have in my hands, the B450M Mortar from MSI. We loved their B350 version which joined us with the previous Ryzen launches, and they should be a nice upgrade for it. It’s still pretty much the same design, but a few nips and tweaks are included.

There are only minor differences between the AMD X470 and B450 chipsets used on the new MSI B450 motherboards; you get two fewer Gen2.0 PCI-E Lanes, four fewer SATA ports and no SLI support. You still get Cross Fire support but only 2way, the same as the B350 chipset.
