While it’s unquestionably expensive, Asus’ X470 Crosshair is a true hero board for serious AMD enthusiasts. It delivers great performance in all respects, and excellent I/O and expandability. If you’re building an AMD-based extreme overclocking rig or a test bench, it should be on your short list.

The suitability for overclocking was beyond any doubt, but apart from that we could observe some minor and major mistakes. BIOS versions that could damage the mainboard, an incorrectly designed voltage measuring point and a few software problems clouded the picture a bit. We judged last year that ASUS had lost sight of its sovereignty with the Crosshair product line.

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VII is the latest in AM4 socket motherboard from ROG and we’re really excited to see where ASUS is steering this line after being gone for a while. The X370 release was a light product despite its pedigree and with ASUS having matured its knowledge of how to best offer features for Ryzen. We received our sample of the Asus ROG Crosshair VII Hero Wi-Fi as part of the press kit that AMD delivered for the launch of Ryzen 7 2700X and Ryzen 5 2600X CPUs. As we expected, the Crosshair VII Hero is a high end motherboard that is loaded with overclocking features and while it looks and feels really solid, our initial testing suggested that performance was nothing special.
