ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII DARK HERO – itndaily

The PCB of the specified motherboard contains elements that you often will not find on more affordable devices (even in the ROG line). ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero is based on the AMD X570 chipset, so the owner of this base can count on all the fastest and most modern technologies / connectors of today (including PCI-E 4.0 interfaces).

The ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero form factor is classic (ATX), but the developers have managed to place an impressive number of all kinds of connectors, bulbs and switches on the PCB. We suggest that you familiarize yourself with the most curious of them in detail.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII DARK HERO

At the disposal of the I2HARD editors was a special motherboard, namely ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero for AMD Ryzen 5000 processors. This model is a continuation of the ROG Crosshair series of motherboards, which was created primarily for system overclocking. Interesting features of Crosshair VIII Dark Hero are: passive cooling of the AMD X570 chipset, redesigned and enhanced processor power system, Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 wireless controller and much more.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII DARK HERO

Asus’ Crosshair Hero Dark uses the same phase count (16) but upgrades to premium 90A parts instead of 60A in the non-Dark model. The 90A bits are some of the most robust we’ve seen and should easily handle any ambient or sub-ambient overclocking. Another significant difference between the Dark and the original Hero is the styling. The Dark tweaks things a bit with the heatsinks using a grooved pattern on the chipset/M.2 covers as well as the VRM heatsinks around the socket.

With the ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero we are looking at the successor to the Crosshair VIII Hero in the test this year. Compared to its predecessor, ASUS has given the current motherboard with the X570 chipset a passive cooler and increased the voltage supply. Of course, the ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero can be used for all AMD Ryzen processors of the 5000 series. In the following test you will find out which features and functions are on board and how the new model performs in practice.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII DARK HERO

The Crosshair from ASUS has been the gaming platform for AMD users since it was introduced in 2006. Within this platform, the Hero has been the mid-range board for the last eight generations to the top end Crosshair Formula that has a few upgrades of its own. That said, the Hero has been one of the most popular boards for gamers and enthusiasts building on the AMD X570 platform. With the release of the AMD Ryzen 5000 CPU series in early November, ASUS readied several new motherboards to complement this plethora of processors; one of these new boards is the ROG Dark Hero VIII.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII DARK HERO

ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero is a rather expensive motherboard, but its price is justified by its capabilities even in comparison with its predecessor without the word Dark in the name. Like all other Republic of Gamers boards, the new Crosshair VIII series has a first-class component base (1.5 times stronger power subsystem) and, importantly, an efficient cooling system. In terms of functionality, everything is fine – all modern ports and interfaces are available to us, including three network connections at once – 1 Gb / s, 2.5 Gb / s and high-speed Wi-Fi 6.

An easier method than manual overclocking, however, is to simply enable the AMD Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO). With this enabled, our sample would still hit 4.5GHz on all cores, though more typically it settled at 4.4GHz. Importantly, it leaves lightly threaded boosting enabled and, as you can see in the benchmarks, you get a big multi threading boost and lose nothing under single threaded or gaming loads.

We were also able to reach an Infinity Fabric clock of 2,066MHz, which combined with a 1:1 memory clock results in DDR4-4133 with tight timings. That’s not something we’ve been able to achieve with other Ryzen 5000 silicon or other boards so far. The Dark Hero was bootable with extra SoC and CCD voltage even higher than this.

ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VIII DARK HERO

The ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero is an update to last year’s award winning ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero. The ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Dark Hero has been equipped with the same accouterments as last year’s Hero, with a few upgrades. The M.2 heatsinks on both slots, a premium lighting solution, integrated rear I/O shield, and great ASUS BIOS have not changed. But the VRM Power Stages have been upgraded to 90 A from 60 A, and most importantly, ASUS has done away with the chipset fan.
