The introduction of AMD’s X470 chipset was an unspectacular affair, bringing only a handful of incremental improvements over the preceding X370 chipset. X470 motherboards reflect this trend too with manufacturers, like ASUS with its ROG Strix X470-F Gaming, using X470 as a justification to refresh existing X370 motherboards with some of the latest features and design innovations that have developed since.

I’m going to check out what Asus has done with their X470 models, test the performance to see how it compares to the two other X470 boards I’ve tested, check out the cooling situation, and then run down and see if it’s a good buy for someone looking to build a Ryzen 2000 Series build.

The STRIX X470-F GAMING features a neutral, black and white colour scheme, onto which the usual Aura Sync RGB colours are introduced on the IO shield at the back of the motherboard, illuminating the wedge shape and ROG logo. The graffiti style text on the southbridge heatsink gives an iridescent effect, changing colour depending on the angle of light hitting it.

Equipped with an 8+2 VRM, and a set of chunky heatsinks, the X470-F should have some decent overclocking potential. OF course, with armored PCIe slots, dual M.2, AURA RGB and much more, it ticks off all the features one would expect from a premium gaming motherboard. If that wasn’t enough, a built-in rear I/O guard, USB 3.1 support and more certainly sweeten the deal.
