Others can’t handle Intel’s highest-end Skylake-X chips without a fan directly on their VRM heatsinks to prevent overheating, even when chips aren’t overclocked. In short, X299 has fallen a bit short of the expectations we hold for high-end desktop platforms, especially when compared to the stability and reliability we’ve seen from AMD’s X399 boards.

The X299 Designare EX motherboard is GIGiABYTE’s latest flagship product offering support for Intel’s HEDT chipset and processor line. With it’s late entry into the fray, GIGABYTE was able to tweak its layout and feature set to make the Designare board a more appealing product over previously introduced boards.

The best news is that Gigabyte took nearly every criticism we leveled against its Aorus Gaming 7 and used it as an opportunity to build a board, basically, for us. That should make it a shoo-in for our highest award. Yet the X299 Designare EX is not a variation of the Aorus Gaming 7 despite design similarities, and this model must still stand on its own merits.

GIGABYTE’s X299 Designare EX is now GIGABYTE’s top of the line X299 motherboard, taking back the reigns from the X299 Aorus Gaming 9, or so I thought. GIGABYTE actually is positioning the Designare EX between the Gaming 7 and Gaming 9. However, that isn’t the whole story; the X299 Designare EX replaces some rear IO, mainly USB 3.0, with two Thunderbolt 3 ports.
