The ‘Gaming Pro Carbon AC’ has become MSI’s defacto top-end motherboard in its main consumer line for the past couple of generations, mirrored with the XPower Gaming for overclockers. The slight change in MSI’s lineup over the last few years, from their trio of Gaming, MPower and XPower lines, to this, has been subtle – most noticeable due to the lack of an MPower if I’m brutally honest.

We grab a Core i9 7900X processor and review the €289,- ASUS TUF X299 Mark 1 motherboard with it, yes the Sabertooth series is back. A nice looking motherboard in dark theme offering nice features, design and of course performance. This X299 motherboard can house Kaby-Lake-X and Skylake-X processors. There’s a strange divergence in the X299 motherboard segment at the moment where certain motherboards are oriented towards consumers looking to use cheaper Kaby Lake-X CPUs and other motherboards towards Intel’s premium Skylake-X. Gigabyte’s X299 Aorus Gaming 7 is clearly designed and fit for the Skylake-X audience.

The X299 Tomahawk Arctic looks fabulous with its generous helping of white, from the PCB to the DIMM slots and I/O shroud. The contrast with the metal CPU socket and steel-clad DIMM slots and PCIe slots looks great, so if you’re after an icy clean look for your build then we can’t think of too many other options for Intel’s high-end desktop platform at the moment.
