MSI’s Tomahawk motherboards provide good gaming value using Intel’s mainstream desktop chipsets. Now, that same focus on aesthetic and bang-for-buck gaming performance is available on the new X299 platform as well. For $279, the X299 Tomahawk Arctic is full of features, both familiar and new.

For some reason it is not called the “X299 AORUS Gaming 5″, perhaps because it is too close to the Gaming 7 feature-wise, mainly just missing the extra Killer Gigabit LAN, the ES9018Q2C chip for audio and has less USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports.

The X299 Aorus Gaming 3 looks like its high-end Gaming 7 sibling in many respects, starting with a voltage regulator that Gigabyte calls nine-phase, which appears to actually be a 9+3 phase design. Competitors would call that 12 phases. If it overclocks our 10-core CPU reasonably, we’ll call it good enough.

Thankfully a few of the manufacturers like MSI have Pro focused lines. This is especially important with X299, a platform that overall seems better focused on workstation builds. Well MSI just happened to send over the X299 SLI Plus from their Pro lineup and today I’m going to check it out and see what it has going on.

Here for review we have the Asus X299 TUF Mark 1. At first glance, you might think its just another motherboard with an extra layer of marketing, but Asus has put their money where their mouth is. The TUF Mark 1 has an industry leading five year warranty, which is no small thing. Excellent!

MSI has done something fantastic here that isn’t immediately obvious. This board is called the MSI X299 SLI PLUS. That name, as simple as it might seem, tells you exactly what this board is for. It’s built for SLI use, plus some minor overclocking. Plus U.2. Plus excellent audio. Plus a huge list of compatible memory. Plus this, plus that, the list goes on and on, but you get the point.

The Gaming 7 also combines the Killer network for the Wireless with the built in Intel Gigabit LAN for those who prefer a hard-wired connection. Additionally if you are fortunate enough to have a fast storage device you’ll enjoy the U.2 and M.2 storage support as well as Thunderbolt 3. Lastly the Aorus Gaming 7 comes with masses of lighting options, but they are something best shown rather than described, so let’s take a closer look.
