AnandTech’s Best AMD Motherboard: 9/20

Our recommendations for motherboards are based entirely on my personal and professional opinion. There are notably a large number of different motherboards across the AMD chipsets including B450, X570 and more recently, B550, so I selected my top four picks based on the four market segments.

GIGABYTE X570 AORUS XTREME

The last feature that we want to put in neon and highlight for you all is the commitment Gigabyte have placed upon bringing the best possible power delivery to their X570 Aorus Xtreme. With an 8 layer PCB covered in double thickness copper and a worlds first 16 phase power – without the use of doublers – the Aorus Xtreme definitely lives up to its name.

GIGABYTE X570 AORUS XTREME

Looking to live up to the Xtreme naming, there’s a 16-phase power delivery with dual BIOS for the more extreme enthusiast, whereas users looking to create a clean looking RGB laden system will appreciate the right-angled 24-pin motherboard power input. The X570 Aorus Xtreme is also the only current motherboard to include a passively cooled chipset heatsink, with GIGABYTE looking to make its flagship model unique and to stand out from the crowd.

GIGABYTE X570 AORUS XTREME

Mentioned to be a new standard for the top of the line board which aims to eliminated the active fan cooling that is present to most X570s – the whole system is a heatsink that doesn’t only lean on performance and function but actually some sort of design and elegance for the most part of course.

GIGABYTE X570 AORUS XTREME

The Xtreme is the only X570 chipset-based motherboard to use a true 16-phase VRM for power delivery – 14 to the CPU and two for memory. In the past, ultra-premium boards would offer similar power phases by implementing doublers. Aorus is able to have proper independence on each phase because the board uses an Infineon XDPE132G5C digital PWM multiphase controller.

GIGABYTE X570 AORUS XTREME

Today we venture into the world of the new extremely high-end AMD X570 motherboards, most of which cost as much if not more than their X299 counterparts, which says a lot in itself. With the X370 and X470 chipsets, costs were a bit lower since there was no PCI-E 4.0, but now with the new technology, boards cost more if they implement the new technology.

GIGABYTE X570 AORUS XTREME

Some motherboards, if not a lot of them, are created fairly equally. The AORUS X570 XTREME on the other hand, looks set to create a new standard for AMD motherboards. Of course, it’s got its rivals from the likes of MSI and ASUS, who have their own flagship, but will the AORUS X570 XTREME have the edge?
